The Chalmers Community Clinic is an example of adaptive re-use, giving new life to former housing units near downtown Austin.

The design involves a retrofit of two building shells to create a new dental and medical clinic that serves an urban population in and around the surrounding East Austin neighborhoods it is located in.

Originally constructed in the 1940s, the exterior of the two former residential buildings was updated but mostly left intact, to preserve the historical character along the prominent street that the buildings face.

In addition to the clinic's renovated areas, a new central entrance structure was created, to serve as a visual cue for visitors to the facility, and providing additional waiting and check-in space between the dental and medical wings of the clinic.
